President Maduro commemorates International Day of the Indigenous Peoples

The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, commemorated on Thursday the International Day of the Indigenous Peoples, while stressing that the Revolution has guaranteed to the original population policies of social inclusion as a guarantee and recognition of their rights.

Through his Twitter account, the Head of State wrote: “In Venezuela, thanks to the Bolivarian Revolution, our indigenous peoples have been vindicated after 500 years of oppression”.

This August 9 is celebrated the International Day of Indigenous Peoples, a date established by the United Nations (UN) in 1994 to promote the defense of the rights of indigenous communities.

In Venezuela, the Bolivarian Revolution has acknowledged the human rights of 40 indigenous groups in the 1999 Constitution, including them in social programs for the protection of the people.

Likewise, in the country there is a set of legal norms such as the Organic Law of Indigenous Peoples and Communities, the Law of Demarcation and Guarantee of Habitat and Lands of Indigenous Peoples, the Law of Artisans for Indigenous Peoples and the Law of Indigenous Languages .

On May 27, 2002, Commander Hugo Chávez established, through Decree 1.795, the mandatory use of indigenous languages in their areas of influence and the creation of the National Council for Education, Culture and Indigenous Languages.

Then, in 2007, it was created the People’s Power Ministry for Indigenous Peoples with the purpose of designing policies and programs in favor of this population.

On August 1, 2017 the spokespersons of the indigenous peoples chose their eight representatives before the National Constituent Assembly, who have presented proposals such as respect for their autonomy in the use and enjoyment of their territory, the implementation of intercultural bilingual education and Strengthening the jurisdiction of indigenous peoples.
