UN Secretary considers “absolutely necessary” a political solution in Venezuela

The UN’s secretary general, Antonio Guterres, described as “absolutely necessary” for the Government and the opposition of Venezuela to reach a political solution to end the crisis that the country lives.

“We believe that a political solution, with the agreement between the two parties (The Government and the opposition) is absolutely necessary to safeguard democracy and human rights in Venezuela”, said Guterres.

This statement comes hours after announced new efforts in favor of dialogue between the Venezuelan Government and the opposition on the initiative of the Government of the Dominican Republic and the former President of the Spanish Government, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.

Guterres said he has been in close contact with Zapatero. He added that he was confident that the negotiations would begin and noted that the UN supports those talks.

On Tuesday, in an official statement quoted by Guterres, the UN Secretary General encouraged the parties to seize the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to address the country’s problems through mediation and peacefully.
