The Bolivarian Government expressed its firm rejection this Wednesday of the statements made by the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, against Venezuela, during the 50th Meeting of Heads of State and Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
Through a communiqué, the Venezuelan Executive Branch asserted that Persad-Bissessar’s position contradicts the region’s integrationist spirit and the very CARICOM’s founding principles.
“Contrary to her position, during the opening of this meeting, the regional leaders reaffirmed their commitment to good neighborliness, cooperation, and the values of unity that have guided this organization throughout its history,” highlights the statement.
Likewise, the text highlights that the Prime Minister’s rhetorical obsession with Venezuela does not represent a national consensus in her country, where the positions of various sectors that distance themselves from her discourse are well-known and public.
According to the document, this attitude jeopardizes bilateral relations and harms Trinidad and Tobago’s own economic interests by hindering the development of joint strategic projects.
“The Government of Venezuela reaffirms its commitment to the principles of Bolivarian Diplomacy of Peace. We reiterate our willingness to deepen cooperation with Caribbean nations, always in strict adherence to International Law and the consolidation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace,” the statement adds.
It is worth recalling that the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago criticized the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on Tuesday for its support of the government of President Nicolás Maduro and thanked the United States for the military attack carried out on January 3 in Venezuela.
