Venezuela joins Concrete Action Plan of Palenque Meeting

Venezuela joins “with all the will, with all the strength” the Development Action Plan outlined during the Palenque Meeting: For a fraternal and well-being neighborhood, which was developed in Mexico, and which outlines priority objectives – based on the realities of each country – to address the structural causes of irregular migration in the region.

This was ratified by the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, who stressed the commitment of the National Government in building mechanisms that guarantee dignified treatment for migrants around the world:

“We have a great commitment to Latin America and the Caribbean for the dignified and humane treatment of our migrants,” he stressed from the city of Palenque, located in the state of Chiapas.

The Development Action Plan establishes five priority areas: self-sufficiency and food sovereignty with the cooperation of the agricultural sector; protection, conservation and restoration of the environment; decent employment, education and development of technical and technological capabilities; energy security, health self-sufficiency and intraregional trade and investment for socioeconomic development; and the fight against transnational organized crime, human trafficking, corruption, promoting security cooperation.

On the other hand, regarding the migration phenomenon, the head of state warned that the region “is facing the presence of a second wave, where two paths have been taken: one to return to Venezuela, and the other to go north.”

He explained that, in the case of Venezuela, the origin of migration responded to the more than 930 illegal sanctions that “directly influenced the quality of life of the Venezuelan population.”
