Venezuela confirms 135 new positive Covid-19 cases

The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, confirmed this Thursday 135 positive cases of Covid-19 coronavirus, which brings the total number of those infected in the country to 2,087.

From Miraflores Palace, the Venezuelan head of state detailed that 31 cases are of community transmission – the highest number in 12 weeks – and 104 are imported cases.

He explained that, of the 31 infected by community transmission, 22 were detected during the house-by-house visits, and nine cases were detected by the sentinel hospitals, where people can go to have the Covid-19 screening tests.

The Venezuelan president urged the Venezuelan population to maintain preventive measures, such as the use of face masks and social distancing, in order to prevent the spreading of the virus, which already registers a balance of 18 deaths throughout the national territory.

Regarding the imported cases, the National President indicated that the main contagion focus is in the border areas, due to the nationals who are returning from Colombia and Brazil, the latter being the second country most affected by the pandemic at a global scale, second only to the United States:

«It is impressive how are growing the cases among people returning from Colombia through Zulia state, we have a difficult situation, it has not reached a serious level, but it is threatening for the Paraguachón-Maracaibo corridor. The focus of the Las Pulgas market has generated four deaths. The virus kills the patient in four days», he said.

It is noteworthy that almost 54,000 Venezuelans have returned to the country, fleeing from xenophobia and the health crisis that is registered in other nations as a result of the pandemic, which has generated an exponential increase in imported cases in the last month.

Given this fact, the National Government deployed an epidemiological fence on the border, where all Venezuelans who enter undergo screening tests – free of charge – for the detection of coronavirus, as well as being isolated and subject to a mandatory quarantine for a period of 14 days.
