Venezuela and the UN sign cooperation agreements on human rights

Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN), Michelle Bachelet, signed a cooperation agreement on Monday to discuss and strengthen the human rights system in the country.
The document – as refers the UN News Center – establishes “a basis for continuous dialogue and points to the possibility of a future agreement that will allow the establishment of a UN office on Human Rights in Venezuela”.
In the same way, it was agreed to prepare a concrete work plan between both parties, within 30 days, from the signing of the document:
“My Office and I are committed to work closely with the authorities, as well as with civil society organizations, to promote and protect the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all people in the country”, said Bachelet, quoted in a note from the UN News Center.
As part of the agreements, the access of representatives of the High Office of Human Rights to detention centers was established, as well as to facilitate “the possibility of future visits by UN special rapporteurs for the next two years”.
On September 13, the Venezuelan diplomat held a meeting with Bachelet in Geneva, Switzerland, where he ratified that the report presented on the situation in Venezuela lacks rigor and is erratic.
