Nicolás Maduro: Letter to the Venezuelan Youth

With pride and love for Venezuela I assume again the commitment to fight to lead this Homeland, and I offer the best of me: my soul, my strength and my life to defend our People.

When I was young, old people always told us: the future is yours. But I tell you, youth of my country, that what belongs to you is the present. That the Homeland that corresponds to you is this, here and now. And that is not tomorrow, it is here and now when you have to take charge. The future of Venezuela is now.

I understand our old people. They knew a country that did not belong to them. That it was in the hands of a few. But the Revolution was in charge of unlocking our history and returning it to its people. History is finally ours, and the Homeland, the Homeland belongs to you.

In other countries young people will only inherit debts from their parents. But what you are inheriting is Venezuela. Your dignity and your wealth. And you have already inherited it, Venezuela and its future are already yours. We conquered it with Bolívar and we reconquered it with Chávez.

The Bolivarian Revolution has educated us. It educated us all. I learned with Chávez to do politics. I learned from his gaze on the horizon the value, not of dreaming the Homeland, but of awakening it. To dignify it. Chávez already did the same, now it’s our turn.

Do put shoulder to shoulder, I will put my heart and together we will make Venezuela the giant Homeland of America. We have resisted so much. We have endured the pain of an unjust war. But here we are, putting our shoulders and the heart … and now the votes.

Because us Venezuelan men and women must demonstrate to the world that ours is a strong and unique democracy, based on something that you young people understand very well: solidarity. A democracy where the just is the welfare of the other. Because in Venezuela the Homeland begins in the other.

Therefore, this Sunday, May 20, I invite you with all my energies to vote. To participate with your friends, with your family, in peace and with affection, in this party of democracy. I invite you to commit passionately to Venezuela and its present, because that is where its future begins.

Nicolás Maduro Moros
