National Assembly starts public consultation on the Project of Amnesty and Democratic Coexistence Law

The National Assembly of Venezuela has taken a fundamental step toward national reconciliation with the start of the process of public consultation for the Project of Amnesty and Democratic Coexistence Law. The document, which is already available for review by all citizens on the official website of the parliament, seeks to consolidate peace through a broad consensus among various sectors of national life.

Deputy Jorge Arreaza, president of the Special Commission in charge of this legal instrument, highlighted that the bill consists of 13 articles that clearly define the principles, purposes and scope of the acts that may be subject to amnesty.

Arreaza emphasized that the drafting of the law is centered on institutional and not individual criteria: “This commission will not be dealing with names of individuals. We will deal with specific events and periods,” detailed the parliamentarian.

According to the established procedure, once the events and chronological periods are defined in the legal text, the System of Justice will be responsible for make the crossing with the files of individuals prosecuted or convicted in order to determine the application of the benefit in each particular case.

The discussion process will have the active participation of academic sectors to provide legal rigor to the document. It will also include political and social sectors in order to ensure that the law addresses the needs of coexistence for the whole Venezuela.

This initiative responds to a direct request from the presidency with the aim of strengthening national unity and democratic stability.

Furthermore, there is an open invitation to the entire collective to consult the full text on the National Assembly’s website to constructively participate in this historic debate.
