Venezuela calls for strengthening multilateralism at the 79th UN General Assembly

The Minister of People’s Power for Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, advocated for strengthening multilateralism, eliminating unilateral coercive measures and a ceasefire in Gaza, during his participation in the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), where he stated that the representation of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela is aware of the challenges of the Summit of the Future:

“The world is witnessing a growing recourse to unilateralism, this trend marked by isolationist and arbitrary actions, such as the imposition of unilateral coercive measures or the attempt to replace international law with a supposed rules-based order, is undermining crucial efforts to address challenges,” he said.

The chancellor, on behalf of Venezuela, urged for true multilateralism, “and the application, without double standards, of the principles of the United Nations Charter” because they constitute the core of international relations and are necessary for the peaceful coexistence of nations.

He explained that, throughout the negotiations of the Pact of the Future, “we emphasized the importance of our commitment to both the letter and the spirit of the UN Charter” in strengthening multilateralism, “as well as preserving the intergovernmental nature of this organization. There will be no future without peace, there will be no peace without development, which requires, among other things, that the inalienable right of self-determination of peoples be made a reality.”

Likewise, the Chancellor ratified support for the Palestinian State and urged for “an urgent call for a ceasefire in Gaza, keeping silent is not an option.” Finally, he noted that, “it is time to move towards the elimination of colonialism in all its forms and manifestations, it is our moral duty.”
