President Maduro expresses solidarity with the people of Chile after death of Piñera

We join the mourning that the people of Chile are overcome by the unfortunate death of former President Sebastián Piñera,” wrote the President of the Bolivarian Republic, Nicolás Maduro Moros, on his social media account, and added: “From Venezuela we extend our sincere words of support and solidarity, wishing strength to all his family and friends. Peace to his soul!”

The former Chilean president died on February 6, after the private helicopter in which he was traveling crashed over Lake Ranco, in the Los Ríos region, in the south of that Latin American country. The news was confirmed by the head of the Ministry of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, who announced that a total of four people were traveling on the aircraft, of which three managed to get out. “But this was not the case with the fourth crew member, who was former President Sebastián Piñera,” she said.

The Carabineros corps managed to recover the body of the former president. President Gabriel Boric instructed a state funeral to be held “as appropriate” and a national mourning be declared.

Piñera was president of Chile in two periods: from 2010 to 2014 and from 2018 to 2022. Previously he was a senator of the Republic.
