Venezuela and Guyana advance talks on the Essequibo

The Chancellor of the Republic, Jorge Arreaza, reported on the satisfactory development of the deliberations in New York, United States, between the Governments of Venezuela and Guyana, initiated this Sunday under the mediation of the United Nations (UN), with the aim of finding solutions regarding the territorial controversy of the Essequibo.

In a message posted on his account on the Twitter social network, the diplomat referred to the mediation coordinated by the UN Secretary General, António Guterres.

Caracas and Georgetown are fighting over an area of 159,500 square kilometers, between the Cuyuní (western boundary) and Essequibo (eastern boundary) rivers, rich in minerals, timber, water resources, among others, from which Venezuela was stripped by the English Crown after a succession of fraudulent actions and veiled military constraints, from 1840. Since then, England extended its dominions over that area, always under the protest of the Venezuelan nation.
