National Assembly installs permanent commissions for the 2026 legislative term

The National Assembly (AN) of Venezuela formally installed its standing commissions for the 2026 legislative term. The distribution of leadership positions encompasses the 13 parliamentary bodies that will drive the year’s legislative agenda.

Among the highlighted appointments, the Commission on Internal Policy will be chaired by Deputy Nicolás Maduro Guerra, while the Commission on Energy and Petroleum will be headed by Orlando Camacho. Blanca Eekhout will lead the Commission for the Development of Communes, and Tania Díaz will preside over the Commission on People’s Power and Communication. To this also joins the formation of the Permanent Commission on Family, Freedom of Religion and Worship, under the chairmanship of parliamentarian Jorge Arreaza.

Each commission announced its main objectives. The Commission on Culture and Recreation, led by Cristóbal Jiménez, will promote 11 fundamental laws for the sector. For its part, the Permanent Commission on Indigenous Peoples, chaired by congresswoman Kariela Aray (PSUV/Delta Amacuro), will work to create spaces for collective and legislative development that benefit indigenous communities.

Parliamentarian Aray reported that they will begin work on new laws, incorporating the voices of indigenous peoples into the 2026 legislative agenda to guarantee them greater participation. This commission joins the efforts of others, such as the Commission on the Development of Communes, which will focus its efforts on deepening participatory democracy.

In the area of energy, Deputy Orlando Camacho announced an open-door policy to receive proposals from all sectors. Among the legislative priorities of this commission are draft laws related to mining and the national electricity sector.

The commission on Internal Policy, under the chairmanship of Nicolás Maduro Guerra, will focus its work on two objectives: To guarantee the peace of the Republic and drafting five major codes proposed by the president of the National Assembly. It will also work on the cause of the rescue of President Nicolás Maduro and the First Lady.

The establishment of these commissions marks the formal beginning of the Venezuelan Parliament’s ordinary sessions for the year 2026, with a legislative agenda focused on social development, energy, culture, indigenous rights, and institutional strengthening.
