The Minister for Defense, General Vladimir Padrino López, stated that the Law of Amnesty for Democratic Coexistence is a transcendental step towards overcoming old wounds and to build a common future.
He made this statement in a post published on his account on Instagram, where he specified that he applauds «with hope and commitment this initiative,» since «it embodies not only a legal solution, but a political and moral bet to a lasting peace, the reconciliation among everyone, and the defense of the greater good of the Homeland, because forgiveness is liberating in itself.»
«As Aristotle said: the stability of the polis depends on the ability of its people to leave behind internal divisions. If this is not done, internal disputes may end up weakening the politic body and make it become an easy prey of external threats. That fragility can only be faced with legislative prudence and a vision of State.
In his words: ‘We must try to prevent rivalries and discords through laws […] bearing in mind that discerning evil at its beginnings is not within a gift of just anyone, but of a Statesman,'» he added.
He noted that «amnesty and pardon do not mean impunity or oblivion. They are, above all, a necessary strategy impulsed to seek for a common ground among all Venezuelan men and women, to rebuild the political and social fabric before internal conflict pours into irreversible damages to peace, that deny sovereignty, progress, and the very existence of the Republic. I am optimistic!»
