This Wednesday was officially installed the Preliminary Commission in charge of overseeing the selection of the 12 civil society representatives who will join the Judicial Nominations Committee, a key body for the appointment of new justices to the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ).
With the activation of this parliamentary body is effectively launched the work schedule for restructuring the country’s highest court. According to the established calendar, the window for accepting citizen nominations will be open from Friday, October 2, to Friday, October 9.
Once concluded the period for receiving and evaluating credentials, the commission will present the official list of eligible candidates to the full Parliament next October 15.
This procedure is being carried out in compliance with the regulatory framework resulting from the recent reform of the Organic Law of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice. That legal amendment established a 23-member structure for the Judicial Nominations Committee, comprising 11 lawmakers and 12 civil society members, a college body which will be responsible for evaluating and submitting final nominations for magistrates for their subsequent approval by the plenary of the National Assembly.
