Death toll rises to 3,685 while aftershocks persist

The National Government presented a new official report on Tuesday regarding the devastating impact of the earthquake that struck on June 24. The report, released by Jorge Rodríguez in his role as President of the National Assembly and Chief of Staff for Temporary Camps, details the magnitude of the humanitarian tragedy and the rescue efforts that remain deployed in an uninterrupted manner.

Up to date, authorities confirm 3,685 deaths and 16,740 injured people. The emergency remains in the most affected areas, where seismological monitoring systems have already registered 1,076 aftershocks, a situation that obligates to maintain activated all prevention and structural review protocols.

Civil engineering inspections in the affected regions reveal an extremely critical situation for local infrastructure. A total of 17,907 people lost their homes and are currently affected due to the collapse or instability of their residences. In material terms, the authorities report the total destruction of 190 buildings, while another 856 buildings have sustained structural damages at diverse degrees.

Despite the severity of the situation, the deployment of urban search operations has allowed to save 6,462 people from below the rubble. In the social and health sectors, the Executive branch reports the integral care for 86,794 families and specialized medical assistance for 25,970 patients. Likewise, in order to ensure sustenance in the disaster zones, 9,603 tons of food and 8,322,853 liters of potable water have been distributed through the 87 temporary camps established.

Finally, the contingency plan is sustained by a massive operational force on the ground that surpasses 60.000 officers. Currently, 29,567 security officials remain deployed in duties of public order and debris removal, supported by 28,362 civilian volunteers.
