UN alerts that number of victims in Venezuela is a cause for international alarm

The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the death toll reported after a military attack by the United States on Venezuelan territory. The spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, qualified the current figures as a cause for international alarm for the organization.

These statements from the UN come after the denounces by the Minister for Interior Relations, Diosdado Cabello, who reported the death of at least one hundred people due to the foreign armed incursion. The Venezuelan government maintains that this aggression has severely impacted the territorial integrity and stability of the country.

Venezuelan Chancellor Yván Gil has assured that US forces executed direct attacks against both civilian and military targets in the city of Caracas last January 3rd. The operation included considerable bombings that affected populated areas and key infrastructure in the capital city.

The concern expressed by the UN adds to the growing international criticism of the escalation of the conflict, highlighting the imperative of respecting the sovereignty of States and the protection of civilians in any military operation. The fact stresses the urgency of a diplomatic solution to the bilateral crisis.
