During the closing remarks of the 17th Summit of the Non-Aligned Countries Movement (NAM), held in Margarita Island, Nueva Esparta state, the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, said that this gathering laid the groundwork to show that at present, where new challenges are presented to the world, the peoples of the SOuth arise.
“It is the time of the peoples of the south, and thus it has been felt” he said.
He also said the debate held by member countries, helped to strengthen the fundamental principles, agreed in 1955, based on respect for independence, sovereignty, self-determination of peoples, and promoting cooperative relations under the premise of mutual respect.
“The debate today and in the course of this journey, has allowed to strengthen, to revitalize the collective confidence in the future of the non-aligned countries. It has been felt a new shine to fortify the common position to excel in quality and capacity of influence to resolve the conflicts of a global character and thus move to a new UN system”, stressed the Head of State.
In this regard, he said that with the transformation of the United Nations System may build a world that meets the needs of the peoples, and not the interests of foreign powers.
“We want a more balanced United Nations system in favor of peace and not of lobbyists seeking for an intervention,” stressed the President, while thanking the efforts made by the delegations participating at the summit, to set positions on the new challenges that exist in the world.
In this regard, he said that faced with these new challenges, are given the conditions for retaking the flags of the new international order, fulfilling the goals set during the founding of the NAM, which are supported in the United Nations Charter.
It is noteworthy that Venezuela has officially assumed this Saturday, by the hands of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hassan Rohani, the pro-tempore presidency of NAM until 2019.
