Castro Soteldo: Venezuelan coffee will have Denomination of Origin

This Thursday, during a tour of the facilities of the 2nd International Meeting of Venezuelan Specialty Coffees, the People’s Power Minister for Productive Agriculture and Land, Wilmar Castro Soteldo, said that the scores of the samples selected by the tasters are very high, which drives us to create a country brand, with “Denomination of Origin”, for its particular characteristics that (other) Latin American coffees do not have.

He explained that this year the Fundación Marca País (Country Brand Foundation) accompanies us at the meeting, together with the Ministry for Commerce, SENCAMER and SAPI to register the profiles that the international tasters managed to verify with all their virtues to give it a Denomination of Origin.

The head of the agricultural portfolio stressed that they will then move on to the regionalization of these coffees, to make known which regions have a specific quality or characteristic: “We have already started with the process of certification of producers to determine the particularity of their item.”

Likewise, Castro Soteldo explained that large specialty coffee companies in the world have already shown interest in Venezuelan coffee.

Finally, he pointed out: “The first buyers from Greece and Mexico are already arriving, last year in the auction for the first place winner they paid $300 per kilo, this year, the coffees reached a score above 90, that is In other words, our producers made much more efforts to strengthen agronomic management and the post-harvest of the item”
