Venezuela denounces to the UN persecution in Colombia against Venezuelans

The Executive Vice President of the Republic, Delcy Rodríguez, reported this Wednesday that a communication was sent to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, to formalize the complaint of persecution against Venezuelans in Colombia.

From the «Simón Bolívar» press room at Miraflores Palace, the vice president read the statement in which she assures that «the acts of violence against Venezuelans in Colombia are the result of a xenophobia campaign promoted by the government of Iván Duque, ”and added that Commissioner Bachelet is invited to investigate in depth the events that occurred in Colombia against the integrity of Venezuelans in that nation.

362 Venezuelans killed in 2021:

Rodríguez warned that according to Colombian legal medicine data, 362 Venezuelans have been murdered in Colombia in 2021.

During the reading of the statement, she expressed that the actions or omissions of the Colombian authorities in the protection of human rights of Venezuelans have an impact in all areas such as employment, health, among others.

She stressed that the figures provided by the National Institute of Legal Medicine of Colombia and human rights organizations reflect the serious impact of this situation, and indicate that between 2017 and 2020, 2,061 Venezuelans were murdered in the New Granadean territory, while in the last five years, 836 Venezuelans have been officially reported missing.

The communiqué also demands justice and punishment for the murderers of Venezuelan migrants and refers to the recent execution of two young Venezuelans, which occurred on October 8 in the municipality of Tibú, North Santander:

Venezuela considers that these acts should be the object of the most absolute and unequivocal condemnation because it shows the degeneracy against migrants. All these acts violate international regulations, such as the United Nations Convention on Children’s Rights, she referred.

Finally, she reiterated that the national government has an outstretched hand for all nationals who wish to return to the homeland through the Vuelta a la Patria (Return to the Homeland) Plan.
