Michelle Bachelet acknowledged consequences of the economic blockade and called for national dialogue

The High Commissioner for Human Rights of the United Nations (UN), Michelle Bachelet, stressed that the unilateral and illegal measures imposed by the US government against Venezuelan oil exports are “exacerbating and aggravating the economic crisis” In Venezuela.
“I am concerned that the sanctions imposed this year by the United States on oil exports and the gold trade are exacerbating and aggravating the preexisting economic crisis,” said the High Commissioner on Friday night, during the presentation of her preliminary report. visit, from La Guaira state, broadcast by Venezolana de Televisión (VTV).
Bachelet said that Venezuela’s economic crisis “has been dramatically exacerbated since 2013,” while reiterating the United Nations’ willingness to “urgently resolve it, in conjunction with the National Government.”
Likewise, Bachelet reported that he held meetings with different organizations in the country, committing himself to advocate for justice and peace for Venezuelans.

Political dialogue
Bachelet called on the country’s political leaders to solve Venezuela’s problems. “The crisis can only be resolved through the meaningful, frank and inclusive participation of various actors in society,” said the UN representative.
“I have appealed to all political leaders to participate constructively with the dialogue facilitated by Norway and with any other effort to try to face the current political situation in Venezuela. The fate of more than 30 million Venezuelans lies in the will and ability of their leaders to place the human rights of the people above any personal, political or ideological ambition ”
She argued that maintaining entrenched positions on either side “will only aggravate the crisis, and Venezuelans can not afford to further deteriorate the situation in the country.”
“I make a call to put aside the short-term vision and focus on the medium and long term,” she said.
Bachellet said that on July 5, the UN will present a report on the human rights situation in Venezuela that will contain much more information than the one provided on Friday, as well as objective analyzes related to all aspects of human rights, with constructive recommendations on how to move forward
“Our Office is ready to give assistance and ensure that the human rights of all Venezuelans are fully protected. Our presence here will make it possible to work with state institutions, civil society and the United Nations system, “said the High Commissioner.
