Venezuela: USA assaults multilateralism in the OAS

The Venezuelan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jorge Arreaza, presented his objection on Monday to the aggressions against multilateralism of the United States within the Organization of American States (OAS) and rejected the inclusion of a topic on his country in the General Assembly of the organism, when this nation is already fulfilling its exit procedures.

“Venezuela is leaving the OAS, we only fulfill the commitments we have until April 2019, but we will defend Venezuela wherever”, said the Venezuelan foreign minister in the middle of a meeting for the session held in Washington between this June 4 and 5.

Arreaza argued that the matter relating to the situation in Venezuela was not approved through legal procedures, and that the State subject to the point has disagreed with its inclusion.

“We are not comprehensively questioning the agenda, but the point regarding the situation in Venezuela, it is not how it has been tried to say in recent days that Venezuela wants no agenda, that the Assembly is going to be left without agenda, not at all, but we consider that we must do things through the correct procedures”, denounced the Venezuelan diplomat.

Some member countries of the OAS insist on taking internal discussions about Venezuela, although this nation formalized its exit from the bloc in 2017, a process that will be completed in 2019.

In this context, Arreaza rejected the intentionality of the member countries of the organization to make some kind of decisions and open debates about the country, without Venezuela, as a State to which it corresponds, having been aware of and in agreement with that reality.

“We will defend Venezuela in any forum and time, as the President of Venezuela has said”, he said.

Arreaza’s statements come after local and regional media echoed a report that US Vice President Mike Pence called on OAS members to suspend Venezuela from the agency.
