Chancellor Yvan Gil: Kidnapping of President Maduro is an unprecedented attack on international law

From the Teresa Carreño Theater in Caracas, Chancellor Yván Gil led a meeting of the Network of Jurists to address the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores. The minister denounced that this act represents a serious violation of international law and the United Nations Charter.

Gil affirmed that the military action against the Venezuelan president and Deputy Flores “violates one of the fundamental norms of international law: The personal immunity of heads of state.” He stressed that there is no valid argument to justify this proceeding, as it would destroy “one of the basic elements for maintaining world order.”

The Chancellor warned that the United Nations system has been “mortally wounded” by these events, placing the world at a historical crossroads between respect for diplomacy and a return to the “law of the jungle.” He described the event as unprecedented in contemporary history.

“If the law of the strongest is imposed through technological and military means, we would be entering a stampede with unthinkable consequences for the stability of the planet,” warned Gil during his address to international jurists.

The minister made a call to build a legal doctrine that would serve as a shield against this aggression, emphasizing that “the return of President Maduro and the First Combatant Woman will mean the victory of reason over weapons.” He affirmed that in Venezuela is currently being played “the greatest epic that humanity has faced in this 21st century.”

Gil called to assume the commitment to give fight on the legal, diplomatic, and dialogue fronts, reaffirming that President Maduro has become a symbol of the struggle for stability and world peace.
