Acting President Delcy Rodríguez commemorates the 34th anniversary of 4F and National Dignity Day

The Acting President of the Republic, Delcy Rodríguez, commemorated this Wednesday the 34th anniversary of the civic-military rebellion of February 4, 1992 (4F), a date declared National Dignity Day, a milestone that, under the leadership of Commander Hugo Chávez, marked a turning point in the contemporary history of Venezuela.

Through a message on her official channel on Telegram, the Acting President highlighted the transformative nature of that journey: “The civic-military rebellion of 4F in 1992 was a cry for dignity that transformed the destiny of our country,” she wrote.

In her post, which included an audiovisual material of historical reminiscence, she reaffirmed the legacy of the feat: “By remembering the courage of those who fought for justice and equality, is renovated the historical commitment to continue advancing with firmness towards a sovereign Venezuela,” she emphasized.

The audiovisual material shared by the Acting President contains a personal narrative that illustrates the political climate of the time. She recounted that, in 1988, after the re-election of Carlos Andrés Pérez, as a young woman, she “locked herself in a bathroom to cry” upon learning the results.

“We felt the betrayal in our bones, when a Puntofijista(*) government was elected again, after so much subservience and so much betrayal… and Chávez was the ray of hope for Venezuela,” she expressed, contextualizing the discontent that preceded the uprising.

The rebellion of February 4, 1992, known as Operation Zamora, was led by then Lieutenant Colonel Hugo Chávez. The movement rose up in defense of the people and in rejection of the neoliberal policies implemented by the government of Carlos Andrés Pérez, in agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), measures that had generated profound social discontent.

Today, three decades and four years later, the national government commemorates this date as a symbol of the rupture with the previous political model and as a foundational pillar of the Bolivarian Project, thus reaffirming its relevance in its commitment to national sovereignty and dignity.

(*): Puntofijismo refers to the “Pact of Punto Fijo”, an agreement between the right-wing parties of the time of the 4th Republic, to arrange their alternance in power, thus disowning and invalidating the people’s will expressed at the voting polls.
