Venezuelan Chancellery accompanies scientific research in the maritime boundary between Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago

The Borders Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade is initiating this October and for over 30 days, the naval accompaniment and border observation for scientific research activities. These activities will be conducted aboard the vessel «Brasilia» on behalf of the BP company, along the boundary of the marine and submarine areas between Venezuela and neighboring Trinidad and Tobago.

The mission, assigned to a national geography expert and carried out under strict diplomatic and technical protocols—directed by the office of Chancellor Félix Plasencia González, is focused on supervising the permits granted by the Republic for research in marine areas that are indisputably Venezuelan and the safeguard of the nation’s interests, particularly regarding the environment.

As a representative of the Chancellory on this research voyage is geographer Lindsay Terán, coordinator of the Geodesy Area within the Borders Office’s Demarcation Directorate, that will join a multidisciplinary team tasked with conducting scientific studies, including bathymetric surveys and scanning of the seabed of the continental shelf, the continental slope, and the oceanic plain within Venezuela’s territorial sea and contiguous zone, among other specialized operations.

«It is an honor to participate in this activity and to share, with specialists from other countries, the cutting-edge technology used to study the ocean and its resources,» stated Terán. For what, as Chancellor Plasencia González remarked during the 41st session of ECLAC: «Venezuela is once again an important and legitimate political and economic actor in the region,» along with the brotherly nations in the Caribbean.

The Office of Borders, within the framework of its mandate, directs, coordinates, and oversees matters concerning the country’s international relations in activities related to the use of marine resources, marine scientific research, the preservation of the marine environment, and the transfer of technology.
