At the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, Ambassador Joaquín Pérez Ayestarán, Alternate Permanent Representative of Venezuela to the United Nations, was elected as President of the Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations and on Strengthening the Role of the Organization, during the opening of the annual session of this subsidiary body of the General Assembly.
The election was held by consensus and without voting, representing a historic recognition of Venezuela’s commitment with the defense of the Charter of the United Nations, as well as multilateralism and the principles of International Law.
The Ambassador thanked for the trust placed in Venezuela to hold this position and exercise this important responsibility. He also reiterated the commitment of the country to strengthening the role of the Organization, as well as the preservation of the purposes and principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.
Likewise, he emphasized that this instrument is not a document of the past, but a living legal framework, which continues being the compass to guarantee the maintenance of peace and international security.
