The President of the Republic, Delcy Rodríguez, announced a reform to the Organic Law on the Electric System and Service, aimed at incorporating the private sector into the processes of the National Electric System (SEN).
The announcement was made during her participation in the opening of the 82nd Annual Assembly of the Federation of Chambers and Associations of Commerce and Production of Venezuela (Fedecámaras), noting that this amendment to the legal framework would be carried out before the end of 2026.
«In the coming days, weeks, before this year is out, a reform to the national electric system law to allow private participation in generation, transmission, and distribution processes. This is something we have also been discussing with the private sector,» reported Rodríguez.
The Head of State recalled that the earthquakes on June 24 caused a loss of 800 megawatts from the SEN, «which was already very battered» due to a lack of access to purchase equipment and spare parts from the main companies generators and producers of electric service equipment.
«Of those 800 megawatts we have already recovered 600, and by the end of the year the lost generation capacity will be fully restored. But we are also implementing a plan to add 13,000 megawatts to the national thermoelectric system between now and December,» she specified.
She also announced the upcoming addition of 7,400 megawatts to the SEN, in collaboration with the companies General Electric and Imsa.
In this context, she highlighted cooperation with the People’s Republic of China regarding the upcoming connection of Unit 6 at the Planta Centro power station; this unit will contribute 600 megawatts and provide stability to central and western regions of the country.
