Venezuelan Chancellor Yván Gil met this weekend with the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, to denounce the escalation of attacks against our country. During the meeting, he accused the United States government of using military force in the Caribbean in clear violation of international law.
During the meeting, the Venezuelan diplomat reiterated the sovereign and peaceful nature of the Bolivarian nation. He declared that these actions by the United States constitute a flagrant violation of international law and jeopardize the stability of the entire Caribbean region.
On behalf of President Nicolás Maduro and the Venezuelan people, the Chancellor reaffirmed the sovereignty of Venezuela. He also emphasized that the country “is free of illicit crops and has no impact on international drug trafficking,» he posted on his social media accounts.
A crucial point of the meeting was the response from the UN’s top representative. Chancellor Gil reported that António Guterres expressed his rejection of the military threats promoted by the United States in the Caribbean region.
In response to this statement, the Chancellor of Venezuela expressed his gratitude. He highlighted Guterres’ support, who considered the military threat unjustified and unacceptable, an action that violates the United Nations Charter.
«The United Nations system must reverse its inaction and not allow another criminal aggression against innocent peoples, such as the current genocide in Palestine, which would only lead to further destruction of the principles of the UN and multilateralism, which are already languishing today,» he concluded in his message.
