President Nicolás Maduro calls for reclaiming Venezuela’s millennial and diverse history

The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro Moros, advocated for a «historical narrative that respects the millennial, diverse, and mixed heritage» of its peoples during the inauguration of FILVEN 2025, held this Thursday in Caracas. He criticized the «colonialist and Eurocentric» vision that has dominated education and called for recognition of the contributions of indigenous cultures.

In the framework of the 21st Venezuelan International Book Fair (FILVEN 2025), the Venezuelan president highlighted the importance of rewriting history from an anti-colonialist perspective that recognizes the millennial richness of its peoples.

A Critique of the Eurocentric View of History:

During his speech at the National Art Gallery and the Plaza de la Juventud (Youth Square), President Maduro questioned the traditional narrative that places the origin of knowledge solely in Greece and Rome, ignoring the contributions of other civilizations:

«History must respect our ancient heritage. Not everything was born in Europe; our roots have their own depth,» he stated.

The head of state also highlighted the legacy of Liberator Simón Bolívar, who combined military strategy with «the artillery of thought,» demonstrating that ideas are as powerful as weapons.

FILVEN 2025: Egypt and the Reaffirmation of the Guayana Esequiba:

Under the motto «Reading Humanizes,» this edition of FILVEN pays tribute to Egypt—the cradle of writing—and reaffirms Venezuelan sovereignty over the Essequibo. Regarding this event, the Minister of People’s Power for Culture, Ernesto Villegas, emphasized: «Egypt has given us pyramids of stone and thought. Today, its wisdom enriches this celebration of knowledge. We also honor Guayana Esequiba as a Venezuelan territory and celebrate 21 years of a fair that tours the entire country,» he added.
