In an act of reaffirmation of food sovereignty, President Nicolás Maduro underscored the importance of expanding the «Venezuela Come Pescado” (Venezuela Eats Fish) plan. During his speech, he highlighted the need to bring these fish markets to organized communities, communes, and community circuits. This not only represents an economic strategy, but also a commitment to inclusion and the well-being of the people:
«The plan must continue to expand,» emphasized the head of state, highlighting the key to the project in grassroots organization.
The fundamental role of fishermen:
From the Petare parish in the Sucre municipality (Caracas), Pedro Infante, representative of the People’s Power Council of Fishermen and Aquaculturists (CONPPA), expressed his gratitude to the fishermen and aquaculturists, who have been fundamental pillars of the plan’s success.
Infante stated that the people of Petare have expressed their desire to continue the workshops for this initiative, which promotes access to quality protein.
“The Petare community has requested for the Fish Protein Plan to continue week after week,” Infante noted, reflecting the community’s commitment to the proposal.
Grassroots Organization:
CORPESCA’s national distribution and marketing manager, Wolfgang Chacón, explained the steps involved in the fish production chain, from catch by organized fishermen to distribution in the communities. This underscores the importance of community organization in the food supply process.
“Community circuits are key in the reception and distribution of products,” noted Chacón, highlighting the need to strengthen the community support network.
Logistics for Access:
Infante also announced the delivery of two motorcycles, in partnership with the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture, to facilitate fish distribution in the communities. Each vehicle will have a capacity of 500 kilos, ensuring that both Petare Norte and Petare Sur have access to fish at affordable prices.
“We must guarantee that all Petare residents have access to fish at a good price,” emphasized Infante, emphasizing the importance of logistics in the plan.
A Commitment to the People:
Since the implementation of “Venezuela Come + pescado” (Venezuela Eats + Fish) on January 31, 2025, weekly campaigns have been held to ensure that the people enjoy fresh, affordable fish, especially with the arrival of Holy Week (Easter). This initiative is an example of the government’s commitment to the well-being of its citizens.
President Nicolás Maduro reaffirmed his confidence in the Venezuelan people, stating that “we have everything” and that the country is moving toward a new economy, where “we owe nothing to anyone.” This message of sovereignty and resilience continues to resonate in difficult times, always seeking to strengthen national independence.
«We are free and sovereign rebels,» President Maduro concluded, closing with a call for unity and the fight for a prosperous future for Venezuela.
