Minister Jiménez: Venezuela must develop its own AI ecosystem

The Vice President of Science, Technology and Health, Gabriela Jiménez, highlighted this Monday that Venezuela must promote and develop with its own technology and innovation the Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems, which respond to the values and interests of the country.

The statement was made during her participation in the «Artificial Intelligence and Law in Venezuela», conference held in the José Félix Ribas Hall of the Teresa Carreño Theater, which was attended by the Attorney General of the Republic, Reinaldo Muñoz, and the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Luis Francisco Thais Santa Cruz.

«Linguistic elements are fundamental for the exercise of law, jurisprudence, among others, that is why the development of digital tools and AI must respond to our identity, culture, legal principles, rights among others. Venezuela must promote and develop its own ecosystem of Artificial Intelligence,” Jiménez emphasized on her Instagram account.

Likewise, the Minister of People’s Power for Science and Technology (Mincyt) also pointed out the importance of adapting and promoting the use and development of AI to the Spanish language, since “98% of these tools are in English, limiting access to more than 800 million Spanish speakers.”

In this sense, she highlighted that there are mainly three challenges and challenges to adapt AI technology to the reality of Spanish-speaking countries:

Algorithmic biases in existing global AI systems, which often reproduce the biases present in training data, which can lead to discriminatory social biases. Privacy: the use of AI in Public Law poses challenges in terms of the protection of personal data and the responsible use of the same,” she stressed.

The third challenge is transparency, since any decision based on AI systems should be auditable and explainable, with the aim of guaranteeing the protection of citizens’ rights:

As the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro Moros, has directed, the development of Artificial Intelligence in the country is a State policy, with a vision of growth for the benefit of the people,” she added.
