Venezuela rejects interventionist statement from the Government of Guyana

The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela expressed its firm rejection of the communiqué issued by the Government of Guyana on March 22, 2024, where were made comments that Venezuela considers inappropriate about the Organic Law for the Defense of Guayana Esequiba, recently approved by the Venezuelan National Assembly.

In this context, the aforementioned Organic Law is based on the will of the Venezuelan people, which was expressed in a constitutional and democratic manner in the consultative referendum carried out on December 3, 2023. This legislative act reflects the country’s commitment to the defense of its sovereignty.

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has communicated to the international community that the new law aims to defend and preserve the sovereign and unquestionable rights of Venezuela over the territory of Guayana Esequiba, always in accordance with international law and the Geneva Agreement of 1966.

This way, the Minister of People’s Power for Foreign Affairs, Yvan Gil, reported through his official account that Venezuela is not obliged to give explanations to any foreign nation about the legislative processes of its institutions. The sovereignty of Venezuela resides non-transferably in the people, as established by the Bolivarian Constitution.

Also, Venezuela reaffirms its commitment to the dialogue process, initiated on December 14, 2023 and ratified at the meeting of Chancellors of Venezuela and Guyana, held in Brasilia on January 25, 2024. However, it expresses its concern about the actions of Guyana, which seem to move away from the spirit of dialogue by forging alliances with US military and intelligence entities, and by continuing to grant oil concessions in areas still pending delimitation with Venezuela.
