Through an agreement approved unanimously, the National Assembly (AN) commemorated this Tuesday the National Day of Afro-Venezuelans together with the Afro-descendant social movements present in the Chamber of Sessions of the Federal Legislative Palace.

With the agreement, the AN seeks to defend, protect and keep alive the patriotic ideas and values ​​of freedom, independence, equality, justice and peace, continuing the historical legacy and combative spirit of José Leonardo Chirino, the great Cacique Guaicaipuro, the Father of the Nation Simón Bolívar and the Eternal Commander Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías.

The document calls for continuing to strengthen policies, plans and programs aimed at combating and eradicating racism, xenophobia and any other act of discrimination, developing training plans and programs aimed at recognizing, teaching and learning the thought and legacy of José Leonardo Chirino, extolling the historical ties of the Venezuelan nation and the African peoples, who participated in the struggles and deeds of the independence process.

In her right to speak in the Plenary Chamber, Afro-descendant deputy Yasneidi Guaineiri recalled some of the commissions appointed by the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, to promote the work of vindicating the struggle of the peoples, such as the Commission for Historic Truth, Justice and Reparation on Colonial Dominion and its consequences in Venezuela and the Special Commission for the Judicial Revolution.

The parliamentarian highlighted the reaffirmation of the independence spirit so that, together with the cimarron men and women, they continue in the construction of a free, sovereign and independent homeland.

Meanwhile, opposition deputy José Brito indicated that xenophobia and racism are tendencies that denote fascism, as well as segregation due to cultural, ideological, religious and ethnic facts and in this sense he proposed to deepen efforts to confront and eradicate them.

The debate was closed by parliamentarian Leonardo Chirinos, who indicated that thanks to Commander Hugo Chávez, Afro-descendants and indigenous ancestral peoples had a leading role in the country and in the National Parliament.
