The president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Nicolás Maduro, said on Tuesday that he would leave the Presidency of the Republic if the opposition wins the parliamentary elections on December 6, accepting the challenge of the right wing to take this election as a «plebiscite»:
«I have never given up and I will never give up and that is why I say to all the opposition, next Sunday I accept the challenge. Let’s see who wins. If we win, we go forward, but I also have to say, I tell the people, I put my destiny in your hands. If the opposition wins again, I will leave the Presidency, if the opposition wins the elections, I will no longer stay here. I put my destiny in the hands of the people of Venezuela, » said President Maduro during an activity with the Great Patriotic Pole.
In recent weeks – ahead of the December 6 elections – several opposition candidates adopted a speech against President Nicolás Maduro, assuring that if they win the majority in the National Assembly (AN), the head of state must abandon office.
They said it in the debate, and have been doing so every day: Henri Falcón from Avanzada Progresista, Javier Bertucci; from Acción Democrática, Bernabé Gutiérrez and Juan Carlos Alvarado from Copei.
In this sense, President Maduro pointed out that the only thing he has to do is “take on the challenge. The challenge is assumed and I call on the people to go to a great victory with the votes of conscience”.
He emphasized that the decision is taken because if the opposition wins the elections on next Sunday, the coercive measures imposed by the United States (USA) that would affect the people would continue:
«Five more years with the opposition leading the Assembly, no. If the opposition gets more votes than us and they win the elections on Sunday, we will take another path. I assume this challenge, I know that the people will come out to vote and we will have a triumph for the Bolivarian Revolution,» he stressed.
He recalled that the Bolivarian Revolution has conquered 22 of the 24 electoral processes (not counting this Sunday) that have been carried out in Venezuela in the last 20 years, and so he trusts the will of the people:
«In my heart I feel the trust and faith that the people will not leave me alone, that they will not leave us alone, that we will go out to vote with joy, with passion, and we are going to a great victory next Sunday, December 6 (..) We are going to see who can do more, the organized people, the conscious people, the Chavista people, or you again, the right wing that has damaged the country so much,» he said.
He asserted that the Venezuelan opposition «manipulates» the needs of the Venezuelan people, affected by the unilateral measures imposed by the United States (US) and promoted by the Venezuelan right wing:
«They try to manipulate the need and suffering of the people, the product of the cruelest sanctions, the most brutal blockade that a people has ever experienced,» he stressed.
«We have resisted, we are facing it, and with the victory of the National Assembly we are going to defeat the blockade and the criminal consequences, and we are going to lift up Venezuela, and we are going to make it beautiful, flourishing,» he added.
For these elections, more than 20 million Venezuelans are summoned to elect the 277 new deputies for the National Assembly for the period 2021-2026.
