Venezuela expresses condolences to the people of the Republic of Burundi on the death of its President

The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, expressed on Tuesday his condolences to the people of the Republic of Burundi, for the recent death of his counterpart, Pierre Nkurunziza.

“We express our condolences to the people of the Republic of Burundi for the regrettable and unexpected physical departure of their president, Pierre Nkurunziza. My respect and solidarity with our brothers and sisters of Mother Africa at such a difficult time. Hugs!”, Wrote the president in his account on the Twitter network.

Nkurunziza was hospitalized over the weekend and died on Monday, June 8, at the age of 55, after suffering a heart attack, according to a press release from the government of that African country.

The president who had held the post since August 26, 2005, faced a coup d’état against him in 2015, which he managed to face to continue fighting against the threat from the Somali Islamic extremist group Al-Shabab.

In August this year, the late President was expected to hand over his mandate to General Evariste Ndayishimiye, winner of the recent presidential elections.
