Venezuela supports WHO’s work and qualifies Trump’s accusations as serious

The Government of Venezuela through a statement rejected the position of Donald Trump, President of the United States (USA), against the World Health Organization (WHO).

The text, issued by the Venezuelan Chancellory, details that “In the face of serious and irresponsible accusations by Donald Trump in an attempt to evade his responsibility in the face of the catastrophic consequences suffered by the people of the United States”, due to the new coronavirus.

On Tuesday, Trump threatened the WHO, accusing it of being “too kind to China” and “in his opinion” of issuing “bad advice” to stop the Covid-19 pandemic:

“The WHO really screwed it up. For some reason, largely financed by the United States, it is highly focused on China. We’ll take a good look at it”, wrote Trump on his Twitter account.

Following is the full text:

“The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela offers its firm support to the World Health Organization and its Director General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in the face of serious and irresponsible accusations issued by the President of the United States, Donald Trump.

The irresponsible statements and actions of President Trump, as well as the campaign that is carried out against the work of Dr. Tedros Adhanom, in addition to being permeated with racism, we have no doubt that they are a new attempt to evade his own responsibility as Chief of State for having minimized the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in his country, which now suffers the catastrophic consequences of his brazenness, being today the United States the country with the highest number of Covid-19 cases and a regrettable and high number of deceased.

We acknowledge the work of WHO and Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who from the beginning alerted the world and world leaders to take the most rigorous measures to stop the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, measures that President Nicolás Maduro adopted immediately, placing all the strength of the Bolivarian Government for the implementation of the necessary measures, which has been largely achieved, thanks to the conscience assumed by the Venezuelan people and the sustained support of organizations such as the WHO.

Furthermore, we share the vision that health is a social right, of universal and equitable access, which can be neither privatized nor commercialized. It is this vision that will allow us to successfully overcome any adverse health situation, for the benefit of life and health of our peoples.”
