The president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, inaugurated this Wednesday the first plant genetic laboratory of the Agricultural Biotechnology Center of the Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Research (IVIC).
From the Dr. Humberto Fernández Morán Agricultural Biotechnology Center, the deputy director of IVIC, Dr. David Coll, pointed out to the head of state that this center “has five laboratories to carry out scientific research related to nutrition, health and animal reproduction, as well as culture media and the genetic improvement of plants.”
This laboratory is made up of young researchers in different multidisciplinary areas, and its lines of work are oriented towards the genetic improvement of plants for agricultural purposes to guarantee their preservation and reproduction:
“All this is done with the aim of creating plants that are more tolerant and resistant to diseases, adverse environmental conditions such as drought or high salinity, among others, associated with climate change,” said Dr. Coll.
The specialized personnel working in these recently inaugurated spaces are committed to contributing to the strengthening of national agricultural production, as well as technological independence, food security and sovereignty, to strengthen the scientific-farmer alliance.
