The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela strongly rejected the serious events that took place on November 14, 2018, in the Araucanía region of Chile, in the framework of an operation of a Tactical Group of Carabineros and in which was killed the mapuche community leader Camilo Catrillanca.

Following, the full communiqué:

“The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela strongly condemns the serious events that took place on November 14, 2018, in the Araucanía Region of the Republic of Chile where, within the framework of an operation of a Tactical Group of Carabineros, was killed the Mapuche community leader Camilo Catrillanca.

The indiscriminate and unjustified use of force by the Chilean State against the originarian Mapuche people who claim the vindication of their rights over their ancestral territories, evidences a systematic policy of criminalization of social protest in a clear contravention of international treaties and agreements on Human Rights.

The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela calls on the Chilean Government to conduct a diligent and impartial investigation into the acts of violence that occurred in the Araucanía Region, in order to clarify the actors involved and establish the responsibilities that may arise.

The Government of Chile must also comply with the recommendations of international human rights organizations on the selective application of ethnic legislation that violates fundamental rights such as due process, freedom of expression and personal freedom.
