Ombudsman will monitor compliance with human rights of indigenous peoples

On Monday, representatives of the portfolios of Health, Education, Indigenous Peoples, Food, Mining and Eco-socialism, and the Public Ministry, held a meeting with spokespersons of the Pemón people of Canaima and the Gran Sabana, to assess the needs of indigenous peoples and the issue of illegal mining.

In the meeting, which had more than 30 caciques present, the Ombudsman’s Office undertook to monitor the effective fulfillment of human rights and the commitments assumed by the institutions of the Venezuelan state, as said Alfredo Ruíz.

In addition to adopting measures for the eradication of mining in national parks, specifically in Canaima, the issue of food was addressed, in order to promote alternative sources of food in these areas of difficult access, in most cases far away from the distribution centers, he said.

Ruíz, during the “Poder Ciudadano” (Citizen Power) program, broadcast by the RNV Informative channel, informed that on October 26 there will be a new meeting in Bolívar state, which will address, among other issues, the coordination of the special indigenous jurisdiction with the jurisdiction ordinary in matters of justice.
