Arreaza: Those who attack Unasur are subordinated to interests outside the region

The Minister of People’s Power for Foreign Affairs, Jorge Arreaza, said this Monday that those who attack the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), “are subordinated to opinions and interests outside our region.”

Through his Twitter account, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister stressed that with Bolivia in the pro-tempore presidency, the international body will be strengthened.

“Unasur is a strategic and diverse process of integration, cooperation and shared development of the South American peoples,” he said.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bolivia, Fernando Huanacuni Mamani, convened last Friday the foreign ministers of this organization to an extraordinary meeting for the second half of May.

From the Unasur headquarters in Quito, Ecuador, Huanacuni said that the main objective of this meeting will be to resolve the position of the general secretary of the bloc, and define actions that strengthen the region as a zone of peace, after receiving a note in which that six of the 12 countries that make up Unasur express that they will not participate for a period of one year in the meetings of this organization.

The President of Bolivia, Evo Morales, said he will work to overcome inequality, promote citizen participation, strengthen democracy and reduce asymmetries within the framework of the sovereignty and independence of peoples.
