Trump prohibits Venezuelans from entering the United States

The US President, Donald Trump, on Sunday applied new sanctions against the Venezuelan people, this time in the immigration field, by suspending and conditioning the entry of Venezuelans to that nation, as informed the White House on its website.

The executive order signed by Trump indicates that the suspension measure will take effect on October 18, and includes citizens from Chad and North Korea.

The restriction is directed against public employees and their direct relatives, specifically linked to the ministries for Internal Relations, Justice and Peace; and Foreign Affairs, as well as the Administrative Service of Identification, Migration and Immigration (SAIME), the Corps of Scientific, Penal and Criminal Investigation Services (CICPC) and the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (SEBIN).

The executive order is also directed against Venezuelan citizens who apply for a business or tourism visa. In the case of Venezuelans who already have a visa, the US Government will subject them to additional measures upon entering that country, “In order to ensure that traveler information remains in effect,” said the executive order.

According to the report, this new sanction is due to the fact that the Venezuelan Government “does not cooperate to verify whether its citizens pose threats of national security or public security, does not adequately share information related to public security and terrorism,” nor does it provide collaboration “with respect to receiving their nationals subject to final orders of expulsion from the United States”.

During his participation last Tuesday at the 72nd General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), Trump reiterated his threats to impose more sanctions against the people of Venezuela.

“We have imposed sanctions on Maduro’s socialist dictatorship … so that its regime responds, and we are ready to impose more measures,” he said.

On March 6, 2017, the US Government had issued a proclamation “On improving processing capacities and processes for detecting attempts to enter the United States by terrorists or other public security threats”.

At that time, the entry into the US of citizens of Libya, Iran, Syria, Yemen and Somalia was suspended.
