During her address at the High-Level Open Debate of the Security Council entitled “Food Under Fire: The Role of the Security Council in Mitigating Global and Local Food Crises,” Venezuela’s ambassador to the UN, Coromoto Godoy, denounced the negative impact of economic barriers and unilateral sanctions on access to aliments worldwide.
Likewise, through her social media accounts Godoy warned that restrictions on international trade and protectionist economic measures hinder global development goals and endanger the lives of millions of people.
In this regard, she emphasized that unilateral coercive measures (UCMs) act as a determining factor in exacerbating food insecurity by deepening economic crises, restricting financial flows, increasing the cost of imports, and severely limiting access to essential inputs for agricultural and food production.
With this participation, the Venezuelan delegation reaffirmed the country’s position in defense of food sovereignty and the urgency to eradicate economic blockades in order to guarantee the peoples right to food.
«We still have time to act. We must transform current challenges into an opportunity to build a world where no one has to live in hunger and where the right to adequate food is a reality for everyone,» she emphasized.
