Ombudsman of Venezuela denies UN discredited its status

On Tuesday, the Ombudsman, Tarek William Saab, expressed his rejection of the recommendation made by the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), to the Organization of United Nations (UN), where it is recommended to degrade the Venezuelan Ombudsman down into category B, “We still maintain the letter A”, he said.
In his remarks, the Ombudsman explained that these recommendations go first to the consideration of a committee in charge, which will make the final decision at a plenary to be held in the coming month of October.
In a press conference at the headquarters of his office, Tarek William Saab said that such suggestions were contested, with the advice and accompaniment of the public defenses of Nicaragua, Bolivia, India and Egypt: “They have accompanied Venezuela in this challenge, and therefore we still maintain the letter A”.
The National Government has sent 19 documents containing 1,027 pages, which explains in detail the actions of the institution during the years 2015 and 2016, however, the instance has not taken into account any of the documents listed.
