Venezuela rejects UN position on border conflict with Guyana

This Friday, the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela spoke out to reject the statements attributed to the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, regarding the border conflict between Venezuela and Guyana.

Following, the full text of the Communiqué:

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela rejects the statements by the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, through which he intends to decline his responsibility over the tensions generated by Guyana, related to the territorial controversy over Guayana Esequiba.

Venezuela reminds the Secretary General and the International Community that on February 25, 2018, it was warned on the necessity to respect the Geneva Agreement of 1966, reiterating the letter sent to his predecessor, Ban Ki-Moon dated December 15, 2016. However, by giving his back to the application of the successive means contemplated in said agreement, the case was remitted, without the will of one of the parties, to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). This action marked an inflection point in the behavior of Guyana, which has abandoned the diplomatic way of a direct dialogue, by taking decisions that challenge the international legality and threaten the peace and stability in the Caribbean region. Years later, the question is made: What has it been worth for to bring this case to the ICJ without having the consent of an essential part, as is Venezuela, violating the letter of the Geneva Agreement?

It is these actions by Guyana, associated with the Southern Command of the US, and authorizing concessions in a sea that is pending delimitation with Venezuela, which are becoming the biggest threat to the peace and stability of the Caribbean. The insistent call of Venezuela has been directed to establish direct, face-to-face conversations that allow to advance in a resolution that is pacific and satisfactory for both parties, of the controversy on the Guayana Esequiba, as established by the only valid document, as is the Geneva Agreement.

This December 3, the Venezuela People will decide, in a sovereign, democratic and pacific manner, its destiny in the struggle to make valid its historic rights over the territory of Guayana Esequiba. Nothing nor anyone will put it apart from this path.”
