The president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, met this Friday with the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres, in the context of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Group of 77 and China, which took place in Havana on September 15 and 16.
The Venezuelan head of state met with Guterres in September 2018, at the headquarters of the multilateral organization, during the opening of the 73rd Period of Sessions of the UN General Assembly.
On that occasion, Guterres pointed out that there is increasing distrust in the world “as a result of the lack of an authentic system of global governance and a fully democratic system”.
“All together, as custodians of the common good, we have the duty to promote and support a reformed, revitalized and strengthened multilateral system (…) we must achieve peace, defend human rights and promote the economic and social progress of women and men from all over the world,” said at the time the UN Secretary General.
In this Friday’s Session, during the Summit of the Group of 77 and China, Guterres thanked the warm welcome and hospitality, remembering the founders of the G77.
In this plenary session, he reflected on the poverty that is increasing and around climate disasters, which “are increasingly frequent,” he said, among other aspects.
