The meetings to explore the start of a national dialogue between the Government and the opposition were held in recent days in the Dominican Republic, with the participation of former Presidents Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero of Spain; Leonel Fernandez of the Dominican Republic; and Martin Torrijos of Panama.
Thus was given to know by the General Secretariat of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) through a statement in which was outlined that peace, justice, institutional coexistence, strengthening of the national economy and respect for democracy and sovereignty are the issues of concern to address.
The call for a dialogue has been a constant in the administration of President of the Republic, Nicolas Maduro, who has convened meetings with opposition sectors.

The General Secretariat of Unasur reports that in the course of the last days in the Dominican Republic, former Presidents Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero of Spain, Leonel Fernandez of the Dominican Republic and Martin Torrijos of Panama, at the invitation of UNASUR, held meetings to explore with the parties to the framework to initiate a national dialogue with representatives of the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the opposition parties represented by the Board of Democratic Unity (MUD).
The framework identified for these approaches was seeking the welfare of all citizens, peace, justice, truth, institutional coexistence, strengthening the economy, preservation of the rule of law, democracy and respect for the national sovereignty.
After making meetings, alternatively, with representatives of the government and the opposition, the former Presidents find that there is a desire for dialogue on both sides, and therefore proposed to continue exploring new contacts in the near future in order to agree on an agenda that meets the requirements of each of the parties and a method for national dialogue. The General Secretary of UNASUR thanked the former presidents’s will and respect in this task. It also shows their satisfaction with the support of the international community, to which it requests to respectfully accompany Venezuela in this dialogue initiative.
The General Secretariat renews its firm belief that the best way to help Venezuela is democratic coexistence and dialogue among all Venezuelans. It is they and only they who have the duty and the opportunity to bring up Venezuela.
