Canada prohibits the installation of voting centers in Venezuelan consulates in that country

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Jorge Arreaza, denounced on Wednesday that the Government of Canada prohibited through a diplomatic note, the installation of polling stations in embassies and consulates in the North American country, to hold the presidential elections on May 20.

He reported that in Canada there are 5,027 compatriots registered in the Venezuelan Electoral Registry to exercise their right to vote.

“We are facing an alleged violation of a human right. The pact of civil and political rights contemplates the right to suffrage as a political-human right, which the Government of Canada intends to prevent”, he stressed in statements to the press.

He indicated that the letter “notifies the embassy, that the Government of Canada has not favorably processed the request made by the Venezuelan embassy, and as a result of which the consulates are obliged, according to this note, to comply and to refrain from installing the voting centers”, reads the letter read by Arreaza.

The foreign minister added that the Bolivarian Government will work to establish a direct communication with the Canadian authorities to shield the democratic character of Venezuela; and urged the Government of Canada to reflect on its actions against the May 20 electoral process.
