The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, reiterated that the peoples of the region strongly reject the war threats from the United States government. This statement comes in response to the deployment of U.S. military vessels in the Caribbean Sea:
«In South America, the Caribbean, and the United States, nobody wants a war,» declared the head of state via his channel on Telegram. The Venezuelan president emphasized that there is a regional consensus against these illegal actions that jeopardize the peace of Venezuela, Colombia, and the entire zone.
President Maduro stated that various polls conducted in the region reflect this majority sentiment of rejection of warmongering provocations. He stressed that world public opinion is unequivocal in repudiating any military escalation that threatens the stability of the continent.
The president congratulated the men and women «who remain mobilized to prevent escalations and achieve peace,» recognizing the fundamental role of civil society in defending regional peace. He urged them to maintain this permanent mobilization as a mechanism of prevention.
«No to war, yes to peace!» wrote the president on his social media, summarizing the sentiment that, according to him, prevails among the population. He emphasized that the presence of citizens in the streets constitutes an effective barrier against fascist provocations.
Finally, Maduro stressed that popular mobilization has been key to preserving peace in previous situations: «This is one of our key ways to achieve peace in all the situations we have experienced (…) with the people in the streets, there is no fascism without traumatism.»
