This Saturday, the former presidential candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, after taking refuge in the embassy of the Kingdom of Spain in Caracas, departed to that country after requesting political asylum.
The announcement was made by the executive vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, through a message on Instagram, in which she detailed that González Urrutia had been processing this request for asylum for several days:
“In this sense, once the relevant contacts between both governments had occurred, having fulfilled the extremes of the case and in compliance with international law, Venezuela has granted the due safe-conducts for the sake of the tranquility and political peace of the country,” reported the executive vice president in her post.
She announced that in the next few hours the Venezuelan government will continue to report on this situation:
“This conduct reaffirms the respect for the Law that has prevailed in the actions of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in the international community,” he says in his message.
Last Wednesday, José Vicente Haro, the former candidate’s lawyer, met with the Attorney General, Tarek William Saab, to inform the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the reasons why González Urrutia did not appear before this body, after three summonses, although they recognize its legal and constitutional powers.
Among the crimes he is accused of are usurpation of functions, forgery of a public document, instigation to disobedience of laws, conspiracy, sabotage to damage the system, and association, for which he is wanted by the Venezuelan justice system.
On September 2, an arrest warrant was issued against González Urrutia, as part of the fiscal investigation regarding the disclosure of the alleged minutes of the July 28 elections.
