President Nicolás Maduro: “In Venezuela is exercised a participatory and starring democracy”

The Venezuelan Head of State, Nicolás Maduro Moros, highlighted the growing active and leading participation of the Venezuelan people in the exercise of their political rights, during his speech at the 49th session of the Human Rights Council of the United Nations (UN),

He stressed that since the beginning of the Bolivarian Revolution in 1999, Venezuela has held 29 electoral processes: “despite the global campaign of the hegemonic media to discredit our strong democracy”.

Within context, the Venezuelan president celebrated that on November 21, the people of Venezuela once again successfully exercised their right to vote, electing their authorities in the governorships and mayors’ offices.

Similarly, he recalled that on February 27, 1989, Venezuela rebelled against the imposition of neo-liberal policies and unfair economic measures “that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) intended to impose, (an uprising) known as the Caracazo”.

“Even to date the exact number of victims is not known, some speak of more than 3,000 people killed, thousands of wounded and disappeared, and at the time there was no international community, no human rights system and institutions to protect our people”, he pointed out.

He stressed that the Caracazo allowed a historic force for transformation to be born in Venezuela, in addition to guaranteeing social and economic policies in the country.
