President Nicolás Maduro confirms arrival of Omicron variant in Venezuela

The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro Moros, confirmed this Wednesday the detection of seven positive cases of the Omicron variant of Sars-Cov2 in the country.

During the delivery ceremony of the National Awards for Science, Technology and Innovation 2021, the national president explained that the presence of these cases was confirmed in states Miranda, Lara and the Capital District.

He pointed out that the cases detected are: A 20-year-old man from Guatire, who entered the country on December 13 arriving from Panama; a 32-year-old woman, a resident of Barquisimeto, who traveled from Istanbul; a young resident of La Candelaria in Caracas, who was coming on a flight from the Dominican Republic; a boy who entered the country on December 17 on a flight from the Dominican Republic, and a 54-year-old woman who arrived in Venezuela on December 12.

The Head of State affirmed that “it was inevitable that this variant would reach the country, because cases have been detected in neighboring countries such as Colombia and Brazil for several weeks”.

“The best defense against Omicron is for you to get vaccinated early in order to achieve a 90% of vaccinated population in Venezuela before next December 31”, he urged the population.

Reinforcement vaccination begins:

In this context, President Nicolás Maduro announced that next Monday, January 3, will begin the application of booster vaccines against Covid 19 throughout the country.

He announced that in this process the Sputnik Light vaccines from Russia, Abdala from Cuba and those from China will be inoculated as third doses “I norder to reinforce the defense capabilities of our body.”

He reported that up to date an 87% of the population has already received vaccines against Covid 19 throughout the national territory: “We are going to meet the 90% goal by December 31,” he said.
